Dreams Have Wings

I'm Kim Harrison, best known for penning the Hollows series though I've tried my hand at YA, traditional fantasy, graphic novels, and a one-of-a-kind world book. I grew up reading science fiction and fairytales, which means my fairy garden has Daleks in it. Recently, I've moved back to my home state of Michigan after a ten year stint down in South Carolina, and it feels good to be home--even with the snow and cold. I've been writing for over twenty years, more than half of that published, and a good day is still one where there is nothing to distract me from my keyboard.

DHW: How do you describe yourself?

K: I am Kim Harrison, author of the New York Times #1 best selling "Hollows" series. I was born in Detroit and lived most of my life within an easy drive of it.  After gaining my bachelors in the sciences, I moved from Michigan to South Carolina, where I remained until recently returning to Michigan because I missed the snow.  I'm currently working on the "Peri Reed Chronicles", a futuristic espionage thriller, and when not at her desk, I'm most likely to be found landscaping my new/old Victorian home, in the garden, or out on the golf course.

DHW: The "Madison Avery" Series starts with "Once Dead, Twice Shy" (at least in our country), but you wrote a pre-series book "Prom Nights From Hell". Tell us more about it. It is optional to read or the readers can start with "Once Dead, Twice Shy"?

K: "Prom Nights from Hell" is an anthology of several authors works, and in it there is a novella called The Dim Reaper. That's the one that I wrote, and it is indeed a Madison story. It tells of how she died and then became a reaper, so I think it's pretty important. You don't have to read it to enjoy the rest of the books, but it does answer a lot of questions.

DHW:  What inspired you to write "Madison Avery" Series? How did it all begin - the ideas, the characters...?

K: I don't really remember what inspired me to write Madison. I fell in love with reading when I was a young adult, and I guess the magic is still there after all this time. It felt good to go back and write something my younger self would like.

DHW: Are you working on a new book right now?

K: I'm working on a new series called the "Peri Reed Chronicles", which is aimed more for the adult market. I've not done anything for Young Adult in a while, and I miss it.

DHW: What are you doing in your free time?

K: I spend a lot of my free time in my garden or fixing things around the house. In the winter, when I can't get out, I bake a lot and knit small stuffed animals like dragons and gargoyles.

DHW: Did you want to be a writer since you were a kid?

K: I didn't go to school to be a writer, but I read a whole lot of books when I was growing up. I actually went to school to be a biologist, and I use that degree in the sciences every day in my writing. I guess what I'm saying is that you don't have to have a literary degree to write books. Sometimes, that literary degree gets in the way.

DHW: What is the most exciting thing about being an author?

K: I can't say what the most exciting thing about being an author is, but one of the best things is being able to plan my day and time. As long as I meet my deadlines, I can arrange my day as I see fit. I can take some time off when I want and not worry about coming back and finding my job gone, and that's a great feeling.

DHW: If you could be any supernatural creature what would you be and why?

K: Actually, I can't just pick one. Something with wings, though, something solitary.

DHW: What do you think about Romania? Have you visited it or are you planning to?

K: I've never visited Romania, but I'd love to someday.

Thank you again, Kim!

Hope y'all like it guys ^_^

NELY CAB was born on December 9, 1974, in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico. She has lived and resided in a small, quiet South Texas town most of her life. Putting her Computer Accounting skills to use, Nely worked in banking for several years. In 2001, the author relocated to Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico, where she dedicated time to the study of culinary arts and the art of oil painting. After her return to the U.S., Nely resumed her employment in banking and later transitioned to the field of Social Work.

Today, Nely Cab writes from the comfort of her home, where she lives with her husband and son. Her life goal is to check-off Bucket List Item No. 95,623,351: To Conquer the World. While she aspires world domination, Nely continues to work on her debut series Creatura.

DHW: Tell us something about yourself.

N: I’m addicted to perfume, coffee, and sweets. I like making crafts, painting and drawing.

DHW: If you could be a character from your book ("Creatura") who would you be and why?

N: I would be Nyx because she knows things and knows how to keep secrets. ;)

DHW: You wanted to become an author since you were a kid?

N: Not really. I did send in a manuscript to a publisher when I was about 10 years old, and it was rejected. I thought that one day, when I was older, maybe I should publish a book. But I didn’t think much about it after that.

DHW: We know that you made the cover of your book (Creatura). You made that drawing special for the book?

N: Yes I did. I really enjoy drawing and I thought that the tree had a mystical element to it, like Isis’s dreams.

DHW:  Now you are a writer, but if you could choose another job what would you pick?

N: Chef. I love food!

DHW:  What is your favorite book? And author?

N: I have many favorites, but I will name a few… Aimee Carter’s The Goddess Test Series, Tahereh Mafi’s Shatter Me Series, Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games Series, and last, but not least, Twilight by Stephenie Meyers.

DHW: What are you doing when you're not writing, in your free time?

N: Everything from housework, to promoting my book, to running errands, being a mom, exercising, and of course, day dreaming.

DHW: Now, are you working on a new book? Can you tell us something about it?

N: Yes, I am working on the 3rd and final installment of The Creatura Series. It will hopefully be out in May 2015 in the U.S.

DHW: In Romania, the other books from 'The Creatura Series' weren't published yet. Do you know if they will be published soon?

N: Not to my knowledge. Sorry!

DHW:  We are curious: what actors did you see in the roles of main characters?

N: For Isis, I would cast Sarah Hyland, though my first choice was Lily Collins. For David… I have no idea. I have yet to find an actor that fits what he looks like in my head.

DHW:  What do you think about ROMANIA? Or about our blog? A message for our followers and your Romanian fans?

N: I think Romania has a lot of culture, tons of rich history, and beautiful people. I especially love that the bloggers are so committed to their blogs, like you are to your blog, and that you read as if it’s as much a necessity as air is to breathe. And for those of you Romanian readers and bloggers, I want to say that I thank you so much for embracing my story, and for supporting me throughout my journey as a writer. xo!

Thank you, again, Nely!

Hope you liked it guys!

Gareth P. Jones first started writing when he was very young but it wasn’t until he was in his early twenties that he completed his first novel. Having had it universally rejected he wrote a novel for children called Who Killed Charlie Twig, which received an equally unimpressed reception and remains rightly unpublished to this day. Gareth now divides his time between writing books, producing TV programmes, spending time with his wife and son, Herbie and playing the slightly ludicrous number of stringed instruments in his front room.

DHW: Tell us something about yourself.
G: I turned 40 last December but I feel younger than that, except I just had to get glasses for the first time this week.

DHW: You said you visited Bucharest. Tell us more about this. What do you think about ROMANIA?
G: I spent a few days in Bucharest visiting the British School of Bucharest to talk about books. I really enjoyed the days I spent in your home town. Next time I visit Romania I'd like to visit Transylvania though.

DHW: In our country was published "The Thornthwaite Inheritance". What inspired you to write it? Do you think your other books will be published here soon?

G: I'm not sure where the idea came from except one day, on a bus, I thought "Hey, why don't I write a book about a pair of twins trying to kill each other". I thought that my book 'The Considine Curse' was out in Romania but I've just checked and I think you're right. Perhaps you should write to the Romanian publisher EDITURA LITERA INTERNATIONAL S.R.L. and ask them to buy more of my Romanian rights. I think you'd like 'The Considine Curse' (as it's about a big family secret) and 'Constable & Toop' (which is about ghosts).

DHW: When we started to read your book we was thinking that the twins are more like Wednesday from "The Addams Family". And we imagined the book more like a movie like this or like a cartoon. There are chances for the book to be turned into a movie/cartoon?

G: No one has bought the rights yet so there are no plans but you never know. You're right though. It is quite cartoonish. I didn't want the violence to feel real but I wanted the emotions and feelings to resonate with readers. Ut's a trciky balance to get right. I hope I did OK.

DHW: Now, are you working on a new book?
G: Yes. I'm currently writing a series of books about some robotic pirates.

DWH: Do you have any habits before or after you start to write?

G: I sometimes play the guitar or ukulele when I'm stuck or I'll go for a walk. Graveyards are good places to walk as they're full of interesting names and echoes of the past.

DHW: We love the cover of the book. Tell us about the idea of the design.

G: The cover of that book is one of my favourites. The artist, Adam Stower got the tone spot on and, I think, it properly reflects the book inside. As well as Romania it's been published in France, Spain, Norway and Sweden and they have all used the same cover, which tells you something about how perfect it is.

DHW: Are you planning to visit our country or Bucharest again? (This time we hope we will meet you:) )

G: No plans but, as I say, next time, I want to go see Dracula too.

DHW: Did you see our blog? What do you think about it? A message for our followers and your Romanian fans?
G: I have and I think it is fantastic. Thank you for your support. I really appreciate you enjoying my book and contacting me to tell me. I wish you all the best of luck with it in the future and a big THANK YOU to all my Romanian fans. If you've enjoyed The Thornthwaite Inheritance, I should also add the advice, please be nice to each other and don't try and kill each other. I think that's quite good advice.

Thank you, again, Gareth!

Hope you liked it guys!

DHW: De unde vine inspiratia?

DHW: Coperta e foarte reusita.

L: A durat cam trei-patru luni sa scriu cartea.

Diane
Sara
Lena
Alex

Dan

Tatal Dianei
???

DHW: Crezi ca “Ultimul avanpost” are sanse sa apara si in stainatate, tradusa?

DHW: Lucrezi la vreo carte in present?
L: Da.

DHW: Crezi in colaborarile dintre autori?

L: Autori: John Saul, Lili St. Crow, Suzanne Collins, Cristina Nemerovschi, Kelley Armstrong, Anna Vary, Richelle Mead, A.R.

DHW: Ai vazut blogul nostru?

C.C. Hunter (Christie Craig Hunter) grew up in Alabama, where she caught lightning bugs, ran barefoot, and regularly rescued potential princes, in the form of Alabama bullfrogs, from her brothers. Today, she's still fascinated with lightning bugs, mostly wears shoes, but has turned her focus to rescuing mammals. She now lives in Texas with her four rescued cats, one dog, and a prince of a husband, who for the record, is so not a frog. When she's not writing, she's reading, spending time with her family, or is shooting things-with a camera, not a gun. She also writes humorous romantic suspense romance novels for Grand Central.

DHW: What inspired you to write the "Shadow Falls" series? Do you have any habits before or after you start to write?

C.C.: I was writing romances under my real name, Christie Craig, when an editor from St. Martins Press asked me to write a young adult paranormal book. She said she even had an idea: Paranormal Camp. That’s it. That is all it took to get my imagination running overtime, and Shadow Falls Camp was born.

As for my habits when I write? Well, I usually get up and start writing in my study. Then, after I get in a few hours at the computer, I usually go for a walk with my good friend and fellow author. Then it is back to the computer for the rest of the day.

DHW: Now, are you working on a new book?

C.C.: I am working on the second book in Della’s series, Eternal, which will be out in the US on October 28, 2014. So, I am busily writing away to make my publisher’s deadline, but Della is being Della and not cooperating.

DHW: You are a writer, but why? If you could choose another job, what would you pick?

C.C.: I’m from the South of the US, and we’re sort of known as storytellers.  As a child sitting around the dinner table every night, it was all about eating and story time. And I could tell a good story.  However, being dyslexic, I never really considered becoming a writer. Spelling is hard, getting the right words can be hard.  That didn’t stop me from dreaming up stories.  I spent years thinking up characters and plots, but was too afraid to put them on paper.  I remember that even as a teen, I would sit on my porch and watch the cars race by, making up stories about who was in each car. Being young, I just knew they were all good-looking boys in those cars.  And I would mentally jump in that car with them and start plotting a story of romance, of mystery and intrigue.  Then at age twenty-three my husband wanted me to go to college and get a teaching degree.  I didn’t want to teach, so I told him my secret dream of becoming a writer.  He encouraged me and almost made it a challenge.  I never can turn down a challenge.

My first book was so bad.  But I didn’t give up.  I kept writing.  I took classes, joined a critique group and writing groups.  I finally sold my first book ten years later.  It would still be years before I sold my second book.  But when I made that second sale in 2006, I didn’t just sell one book--I sold four books.

I love writing.  I’m living my dream.  And I encourage everyone to hold tight to their dreams.  And it doesn’t matter what kind of dreams. If you want something really badly, never give up. That said, if I wasn’t a writer, I think I’d be a comedian. I love standing up in front of people and making them laugh. As a writer, I really get to do both when I talk at a signing or teach a writing class.

DHW: What is your favourite author or book?

C.C.: Now that is a hard one! I have so many friends that are fabulous authors and I love reading their books. So, really, you can’t ask me to name names. They are all great authors and dear friends.

DHW: We are curious: what actors did you see in the roles of main characters?

C.C.: This is a good question. I get asked about a Shadow Falls movie a lot, and I get emails from fans with suggestions of actors for the various characters. I love looking at their suggestions because they seem to be much more knowledgeable about the young actors of today. And the truth is, if there is a Shadow Falls movie or TV series, I’ll probably go with suggestions from the producer, or at least hope I have final say.

DHW: What do you think about Romania? Or our blog? A message for our followers and your Romanian fans?

C.C.: I LOVE your blog! And I’d love to visit Romania one day. It sounds like a beautiful country.

Thanks so much for inviting me to your blog today. I get great emails from my Romanian fans and I’m always amazed to think that people so far away are reading my books. You are the best!

Thank you, C.C.!

Hope you'll like it, guys :) !

MEGAN CREWE was born in Toronto, Canada around the end of 1980, and she grew up there with her parents, her younger brother, and various cats. She finished her first (very bad) novel when she was 14, and started submitting short stories to magazines around the same time.  Her first book is calling "Give up the ghost", and after it comes "The Fallen World Trilogy". She's still living in Toronto, now with her husband and three cats of her own.

DHW: Tell us somethig about yourself.

M: I've been making up and writing down stories since I was a little kid, but I didn't think about trying to become an author until I was a teenager.

DHW: What inspired you to write? A special person, a special place or a special memory?

M: Mostly I just love making up stories!  I'm sure it helped that my parents read lots of books to me as a child.

DHW: Tell us somethig about your first book "GIVE UP THE GHOST".

M: GIVE UP THE GHOST is about a girl whose only friends are ghosts, who uses the secrets they find out to expose the wrongdoings of her classmates.

DHW: What about your new series " THE FALLEN WORLD"?

M: The Fallen World trilogy is about a deadly epidemic and a girl and her friends struggling to survive it.

DHW: In Romania weren't published yet. Do you know if this will happen?

M: I haven't heard anything about the trilogy being picked up in Romania, but I hope it will be!  Readers who'd like to see it there can write to the publishers letting them know.

DHW: Now, are you working on a new book?

M: I have a new trilogy starting this fall.  The first book is EARTH & SKY. It's about time travel and people from other planets.

DHW: You are a writer, but why? If you could choose another job, what would you pick?

M: I love writing and getting to share my stories with people, so this is the best job for me.  If I couldn't be a writer, I'd probably be working either with kids or with animals.

DHW: What is your favourite book? But author? Or actor?

M: It's hard for me to pick one favorite book, but some of my favorite authors are E. Lockhart, Megan Whalen Turner, and Elizabeth Wein.
E. Lockhart
Megan Whalen Turner
Elizabeth Wein

DHW:  What is more exciting for you: writing or reading?

M: Both are a lot of fun, but I prefer writing a little more because I get to explore the situations and characters that I find most interesting.

DHW: What do you think about Romania? And our blog?

M: I am impressed by how many enthusiastic readers there are in Romania and so happy that there are blogs like yours sharing that love of books.

DHW: A messaje for our followers and your romanian fans?

M: Thank you so much for reading and talking about my books!  I hope more of them will be published in Romania soon!

Thanks for the interview!

Megan

We thank you, too, Megan!

Hope you like it, guys! :)
